This October, the Center for Architecture in New York City opened The Edgeless School: Design for Learning, an exhibition that examines how 21st century education is affected by the digital revolution. Central to this exhibit is examining how architecture is responding to, and driving, technology’s presence within the classroom. Shaw Contract Group is an underwriting sponsor of the exhibit.
“Design and technology are inextricably linked, with both significantly impacting how we present and receive information. The classroom setting is rapidly evolving in an effort to capitalize on the teaching power of technology,” said Wanda Dunaway, director of education markets for Shaw Contract Group.
“A notion of ‘edgelessness’ has emerged in the design of schools, blurring distinctions between a traditional classroom and an open classroom, indoors and outdoors, and schools fully reliant of public funding and those fully reliant on private funding,” said Thomas Mellins, curator of The Edgeless School. “Edglessness is a defining feature of the 19 schools featured in the exhibit, which explores what both architects and educators are thinking about today, in terms of how technology is impacting the way people learn and how to best teach young people.”
“Shaw Contract Group is supporting The Edgeless School exhibition because it presents design best practices, both K-12 and higher education organizations that are thinking about technology- rich environments at a higher level. As a designer of flooring solutions, we understand the impact that a space can have on a student’s learning experience and believe that The Edgeless School offers findings that can impact the way that we approach the education market,” added Dunaway.
A central piece of The Edgeless School is a mock classroom environment, designed to showcase the latest innovations that are impacting and enhancing the way that students are learning, and will learn going forward. Shaw Contract Group contributed carpet tile to The Edgeless School, a new collection called Light Series, where pattern and light are used to engage, influence and stimulate the learning environment.
The Edgeless School will be on display at the Center for Architecture through January 19, 2013. Entrance to the Center is free of charge.
