Retail Showstopper: Clarks America

Innovation is underfoot at Clarks America retail space (a 2014 Design is…Award entrant) is lauded for attention to detail. Here, an adjustable lit shelf smart wall by TC Millwork allows for easy rearrangement of shelving to accommodate different heights of shoes.  Ample lighting under each shelf adds suberb lighting and visibility throughout the space.

Retail Showstopper: Silvercar

Two words: luxury & convenience.  Silvercar ‘s unique approach to customer service utilizes mobile technology to benefit customers-on-the-go.  The retail space takes cues from silver Audi A4, the sole vehicle in its fleet. Interiors feature silver metal contrasting with illuminated components and varying textures.  Black leather walls and burl wood veneer enhance the luxury rental experience.  The aesthetic is sharp, evoking movement while keeping a striking sophistication. The customer path is carefully crafted, with features such as the fast lane to usher users to their car – efficiently – similar to highway traffic culture.  Self-kiosks with illuminated resin reflect light into the space like headlights, the space evokes movement while reflecting the client’s luxury car inspiration. And as we all know, the devil is in the details.  Silver walls flanking the iPad kiosk are custom etched with designs representing aerial view of cars on the road. And let’s not overlook the floor – On the Edge carpet tile complements the aesthetic injecting additional dimension into the sleek, refined interior.

What’s Trending in Retail

Spring is approaching, and with it brings new trends and fresh palettes.  In terms of color, we will see more cool, soft shades. According to the Pantone Spring 2015 Fashion Color Report, a mix of understated brights, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals will take center stage this season. Patterns range from floral to tropical with a mix of cool and warm tones (think ice blue and lemon yellow).

In the realm of merchandising,  GlobalShop 2015 attendees will glimpse current and upcoming trends in retail as they pertain to an immersive, innovative shopping experience.  With breakout sessions focusing on store design and visual merchandising, consumer insights and the path to purchase, participants will learn about the technologies shaping retail and how to best leverage opportunities and engage consumeres.  Held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, the show begins today and runs through March 26.

3D printing as typographic art

The Sense of Touch as reinvented in the ColorSense color & trend forecast looked at the tactility of 3D printing – both as an innovation and an art form.  Here, we see how Chinese designer and artist Hongtao Zhou uses 3D printing to replicate cityscapes – created from the lifted letters on a page. With an idea in mind, Zhou attempts to get his shrunken buildings and skyscrapers to match that of his vision – another example of how this modern printing technology allows people to add dimension to their vision.

Awaken your Senses with Color

Artist and Illustrator Hyo Taek Kim’s inspiration for his The Colors Of series stem from a childhood spent watching Hayao Miyazaki’s films, esteemed for  their brilliant color. The artist created palettes for Miyazaki’s most popular films displaying each in a simplistic, vertical manner.  See more at design-milk.com

Much like we did with ColorSense, our recent trend+color forecast, Hyo Taek Kim offers an interpretation of trends that raise awareness of sensory influences and nurture direct human connections.  The eight palettes in revealed in the ColorSense film are are designed to appeal to our senses – even those that are non-traditional.
