Shaw Create Centre - Atrium View med res                                                                                                                                                Cartersville, Ga. – July 1, 2016 (Image courtesy of Gensler):                                                Shaw Industries Group Inc. broke ground on a three-story, 67,000 square foot Create Centre in Cartersville, Ga. on Friday, June 24. Scheduled for completion in late 2017, the Centre will house the commercial division’s marketing, design and innovation associates which includes Shaw Contract’s marketing and product design teams.
The Create Centre will offer a stimulating, storytelling environment that is a catalyst for growth and innovation across Shaw’s commercial business. Envisioned to inspire Shaw’s talented professionals, the Centre also will serve as a tool in recruiting new talent as the company continues to grow. This new building will be located near Shaw Plant 94, where the company’s commercial design and marketing teams along with manufacturing for Shaw’s custom business are currently located. That facility will continue custom manufacturing operations and will house Shaw’s Custom Design Studio and hospitality customer service teams once the Centre is complete. The addition of the Create Centre will enhance Shaw’s ability to provide design excellence with multiple disciplines delivering against Shaw’s client-centric approach.
“We find value in locating manufacturing, design, marketing and others in close proximity to one another – in the same region, the same state or in this instance the same county,” says Shaw President Randy Merritt. “We’ve found that it sparks new ideas, greater information sharing, and more meaningful engagement with one another. The Create Centre will be an important tool in supporting our vision of growth for our commercial business including global expansion and domestic market leadership.”
The new workspace will provide a collaborative environment that facilitates the sharing of ideas; that ignites fresh thinking; that fosters Shaw’s culture of innovation, diversity and inclusion; and that showcases Shaw Contract and Patcraft’s design and performance leadership.
Designed by architecture firm Gensler, the Centre is expected to be USGBC LEED certified and will feature ample daylight and open collaborative spaces. “This building will be as beautiful as it is functional and sustainable, much like our own products,” notes Brenda Knowles, vice president of marketing, Shaw commercial division. “We are
committed to continuously providing clients with the best solutions for their projects, and the Create Centre will provide the ideal setting for our talented team members to create, dream, collaborate, and solve challenges.”
This $24 million facility represents Shaw’s ongoing investment in its commercial business. In the past few years, Shaw has significantly grown its commercial sales team; opened new showrooms throughout the world; and invested more than $85 million in an additional carpet tile manufacturing facility, which will open in Adairsville,
Ga. later this year.
In addition to the Create Centre, Shaw Contract maintains showrooms in Atlanta, New York, London, Shanghai, Beijing, New York and other global design hubs where Shaw Contract’s presence is a catalyst for for design excellence. Major Shaw Contract clients are located in the Atlanta area. From fortune 500 companies to local universities and hospitals, the business and organizations that impact the Atlanta economy will have access to this creative space – giving them the opportunity to work with architects and designers in Atlanta to continue developing commercial interiors which will attract employees, students, visitors and customers.
This space is designed to spur global innovation for our marketing and design teams, and to inspire visitors and the greater community. Shaw Contract is recognized as a leader in commercial design, and The Create Centre reflects the ideal environment to host clients, inform design professionals and promote our position as a global flooring provider, ” says John Stephens, VP of Marketing.
“Shaw is Bartow County’s largest employer with more than 3,100 associates working here,” remarks Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini. “We’re proud to see the company continue to thrive and invest in the community. It’s a demonstration of the city and county’s ongoing efforts to promote the growth of existing businesses in addition to
attracting new companies and industries to the area.”

Design Is a Conversation in the Park at GreenBuild 2015

greenbuild-2015

We are especially excited to not only attend GreenBuild 2015 at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center this week, but even more enamored to amplify our conversation about sustainability and material health with the design community. There are three different ways you can chime in and keep the dialogue moving forward.

We hosted our first tweet chat earlier this month, with special guest @RachelGutter (see her bio below), to give everyone an opportunity, using #shawlocalconvo, to participate in a focused conversation around material health and sustainability. During the hour and a half chat, the conversation touched on myriad topics ranging from healthy schools to educating end users on the long term benefits of choosing sustainable products; even if it costs them a little more in the short term. Based on the feedback from clients and experts alike, we will be hosting another #shawlocalconvo on Nov. 18th from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. featuring special guest tweeters from C2Ccertified and others including Shaw’s very own sustainability expert Kelly Ballew. Though this #shawlocalconvo will be centered around Cradle 2 Cradle certification driving innovation at every level of the organization, we welcome any well-timed, yet sustainability-focused, tangent from our digital audience. Look for the highlights to be posted as a Storify shortly after the event.

greenbuild-2015-1

As we all know, pictures are worth a thousand words, and our #shawyourpark promotion gives anyone with a smartphone and a Twitter handle a chance to turn a snapshot of your favorite local park into a few thousand dollars worth of renovations. Simply take a photo of a public space in your neighborhood, and some ideas for improving it, and tag it with #shawyourpark. One winner will be selected and receive $5,000 donation from us to make those enhancements come to life.

If you’re lucky enough to attend the GreenBuild Expo with us, then you have to stop by Booth #1305 to join us for Conversations in the Park, on The Park naturally. Here’s a list of our special guests and what they bring to the conversation:

David Gottfried

greenbuild-2015-2

David Gottfried will be speaking about health & wellness from 12:45-1:15 on Wednesday Nov. 18th

It’s safe to say this event wouldn’t exist without David Gottfried. As the founder of the U.S. Green Building Council and World Green Building Council, he is a human catalyst for transformation in the green building industry. Gottfried has penned three highly-acclaimed memoirs, but will be discussing his latest work Explosion Green which was published June 2014. In it, he describes how the construction and building industries have evolved toward more sustainable standards without sacrificing profitability. His irascibly infectious self-deprecating humor has earned the title three 2014 Indie Book Awards: Second Place Grand Prize for Non-fiction, Business Category, and Memoir Category.

William McDonough

greenbuild-2015-3

William McDonough will be speaking about the circular economy from 5-5:30 on Wednesday Nov. 18th

Much like Gottfried, William McDonough co-wrote Cradle to Cradle and launched a global movement which challenged designers to think as much about what happens at the end of a product’s life cycle as they do in the beginning. In 2012, McDonough began collaborating with Stanford University Libraries on a “living archive” of his work and communications. He has been awarded three times by the US government, and in 2014, McDonough was appointed as Chair of the Meta-Council on the Circular Economy by the World Economic Forum.

Rachel Gutter

greenbuild-2015-4

Rachel Gutter will be speaking about green schools from 2:30-3 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 19th

Rachel Gutter is Senior Vice President of Knowledge at the U.S. Green Building Council and Director of the Center for Green Schools. Rachel’s dynamic leadership propels the green schools movement forward; galvanizing international corporations, global institutions and government entities around a singular purpose: to put every student in a green school this generation. Under her direction, the Center for Green Schools has published over 1,000 pages of technical guides and original research and deployed more than half a million volunteers who have contributed $46 million in donated time to transform schools around the globe. Kentucky State Rep. Jim Decasere (R) and Hawaii State Rep. Chris Lee (D) will also join Rachel to share their stories about how green schools have had a positive impact in their respective communities.

We will also be hosting a cocktail hour from 4-6 p.m. after our forums to allow everyone a chance to unwind and keep the conversation, and libations, flowing. We can’t wait to see and hear from everyone attending and we’ll keep the conversation going long after the last session has ended!

#ShawLocalConvo encourages discussion on sustainability drivers

As part of Shaw Contract Group’s prequel to GreenBuild 2015, we decided to engage Twitter followers directly with a tweet chat focused around safe building practices, material health and trending issues around sustainability. Followers can chime in using #shawlocalconvo to answer questions, share resources and respond to other  opinions. Featured guests @RachelGutter, SVP of Knowledge for the U.S. Green Building Council, and Shaw Industries Product Sustainability Manager Kellie Ballew shared their insight and provided clarification as needed. Some of the condensed highlights from this conversation is shared in the feed below:

The conversation about designing for a positive impact is ongoing – stay tuned for additional content around material health and sustainable topics leading up to GreenBuild.  Another tweet chat is scheduled to occur during the event – so make sure to follow our feed.   We’ve also slated several speakers for Conversations in the Park, so make sure to visit us in booth #1305 for these opportunities to engage with sustainability leaders.

Visit shawcontractgroup.com for detailed information about our approach to material health and product sustainability.  Shaw’s corporate-wide sustainability goals and initiatives are communicated in our 2014 sustainability report.

sustainability-india-1

Sustainability is a key concern for designers and they prefer to use eco-friendly products and materials. They also believe they could weave sustainability in their design projects. This follows a recent survey conducted with key architect and design industry leaders who attended the Design Is Connected Retreat organised by Shaw Contract Group in Goa, India from 9 to 11 October 2015. Shaw Contract Group organised this retreat with the aim to connect with their partners in the Asia Pacific region and India in the aspect of design.

8 out of 10 designers also rated design as the most important consideration when selecting a supplier.

“The discussions and insights drawn from key leaders in the design and architecture industry have been beneficial to Shaw Contract Group. Following this retreat, we are able to align our product offerings with our suppliers to ensure the Architects and Designers in India are shown our full range of products. This has been helpful in our continual collaboration with India.” said Dan Clark, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Shaw Contract Group.

“It was a very inspiring event for those in the design field to see such level of work being done on the design, pattern and texture of carpets” said Sabina Reddy, Director, at M Moser Associates.

“The next trend will be moving from geometrical patterns to more abstract patterns with bright colours,” says Raghunath Avutapalli, Senior Architect, DWP Interics, in relation to design trends in 2016.

On creating sustainable designs, Satish Purushan, Senior Architect, STUP Consultants, says that “it is crucial to create products that not only have 100 per cent LEED rating on paper, but are also eco-friendly in terms of practicality in order to raise awareness and promote sustainability across all industries.”
