This month, a fifth grade class visited Shaw Contract Group’s Plant 94 to learn about future career opportunities. In addition to Shaw Contract Group designers, they got the chance to hear MASS Design Group‘s Michael Murphy tell his story. Hearing from Shaw Contract Group designers and Michael helped to expose the students to several future career options while challenging them to make a difference in the world.
Even the youngest of minds can help make change, as evident in the letters each of the children wrote Michael to thank him for is time.
A group of 5th graders from Westwood Elementary School in Dalton, GA recently visited Shaw Contract Group’s product designers at Plant 94 in Cartersville, GA. As part of a class career project, each student is researching future career options, the education required, growth opportunities and more. While at 94, students learned about how carpet is designed and made. Additionally, students were able to meet Michael Murphy of MASS Design. MASS is an innovative firm that is using architecture to improve health, economic, and social outcomes in the U.S. and third-world countries like Haiti and Rwanda. Shaw Contract Group is a supporter of development of MASS’s research and training programs that drive its architecture and policy projects in the field.

Michael Murphy, Co-Founder and Executive Director of MASS Design Group, engaged in a conversation with NeoCon attendees during a luncheon hosted by Shaw Contract Group. He spoke about improving social equity and health outcomes through design innovations. Michael has a B.A. in English and a Masters in Architecture, so we thought it would be fitting to ask what reading material he suggests for all designers working in the healthcare industry. In a recent op-ed, Michael Murphy and Alan Ricks of MASS Design Lab (MDLab) discuss the true cost of not investing in a better-designed built environment.
