NEOCON: Exploring the Design Implications of the Affordable Care Act

MASS Design Group and Shaw Contract Group host CEU presentation at NeoCon

As we design new infrastructure solutions within the current restraints on development, we must recognize that hospital architecture remains our interface with the healthcare system and should be considered an integral factor in approaching the problem of access.  Designers have a current opportunity to participate in the conversation of designing integrated solutions to persistent problems in healthcare.

On June 15, during Chicago’s annual NeoCon expo, Shaw Contract Group will present a compelling look at how the Affordable Care Act impacts the future of healthcare design during a live conversation with Michael Murphy of MASS Design Group. A non-profit design firm based in Boston, MA and Kigali, Rwanda, MASS Design Group provides infrastructure, buildings, and the human and physical systems necessary for growth, dignity and wellbeing.

The event includes lunch and provides attendees an opportunity to earn CEU credit (IDCEC and AIA qualifying for Health Safety Wellness). The event is limited to a small audience, but designers and architects who will not be at NeoCon can schedule a filmed version of this CEU by contacting their local Shaw Contract Group Account Manager.

NeoCon is the largest commercial interiors show in North America, taking place at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago since 1969.  The three-day event is the premier platform for connecting, learning and doing business in the industry, and attracts 50,000 design professionals and 700 exhibitors.  Visit www.neocon.com for more information.

MASS Design Goes Beyond the Building

‘Beyond the Building’ speaks to the core values we have held since MASS began five years ago. Their 2014 theme articulates the end goal of their projects: that they work within communities to improve lives through architecture. They do that through architecture’s processes, but in our own way: local partners and materials, sustained economic impact, and better health through design.

MASS Design has seen that architecture is much more than buildings. Join them this year as we think #beyondthebuilding. Learn more at MASSDesignGroup.org.

Shaw Contract Group and Michael Murphy Discuss Design with Local 5th Graders

A group of 5th graders from Westwood Elementary School in Dalton, GA recently visited Shaw Contract Group’s product designers at Plant 94 in Cartersville, GA. As part of a class career project, each student is researching future career options, the education required, growth opportunities and more. While at 94, students learned about how carpet is designed and made. Additionally, students were able to meet Michael Murphy of MASS Design. MASS is an innovative firm that is using architecture to improve health, economic, and social outcomes in the U.S. and third-world countries like Haiti and Rwanda. Shaw Contract Group is a supporter of development of MASS’s research and training programs that drive its architecture and policy projects in the field.

MASS Design’s Rwandan Doctor’s Housing wins Buro Happold Effectiveness Award

Butaro Hospital 1MASS Design Group is this year’s winner of the Buro Happold Effectiveness Award – a competition that celebrates designs which have made a positive impact on society.

The award was given for The Butaro Doctor’s Housing, which provides invaluable on-site physician housing in an area where doctor retention is a constant challenge. After opening in 2012, the four beautiful duplexes have inspired dignity, fostered community and fomented sustainability of the Burera District’s rural healthcare system.

Presenting a formidable package of gorgeous imagery, quantitative survey results and evidence of behavioral change, all sitting under a halo of noble aims, MASS Design Group proved with ease that Butaro’s presence has benefited the local community enormously.

Shaw Contract Group continues its partnership with MASS Design Group through the MASS Lab, a platform to develop, test, implement, and disseminate new ideas about how we build a better, more dignified world.
