In its seventh year, the Shaw Contract Group Design Is… Award program honors architecture and design firms that are changing the very idea of what design is. Through these winning projects, selected from commercial spaces from around the globe, we see how design is redefining the way we work, play and organize our lives. The winning firms will be recognized in an upcoming advertising campaign in leading industry publications and receive an original award sculpture. A $2,000 charitable donation in the name of each winning firm will be awarded to the program or organization of the firm’s choosing. Shaw Contract Group will also promote its winners through promotional and marketing materials. Out of 285 entries from 19 countries, the following five firms are the Design Is… Award winners for 2012:

Last year, Gensler Atlanta was one of our Design is…Award winners for their Aflac project. As a winner, they were awarded with a $2,000 scholarship to give to the organization or person of their choosing. One lucky student was the recipient of the scholarship.
Elizabeth Sterling, currently in her third year at the University of North Texas, is pursuing a major in Interior Design and minor in English. Throughout her academic career, she has had the opportunity to travel abroad to Uganda and China.
“Ultimately, these travels have allowed me to explore the various ways in which architecture and design create sustenance and culture in a place,” says Sterling.
Her career aspirations have evolved since starting school, from residential design to finding a niche in commercial and hospitality design.
We are happy to see the Design is…Award scholarship make design aspirations, like Elizabeth’s, become a reality.
